Sometimes we think of prayer as an elaborate set of long dissertations with moaning and wailing and prostrating or at the very least — a lot of words. You won’t find the description “arrow prayer” in the Bible as it is just a way to communicate the concept of a simple, direct, powerful prayer “shot” up to Heaven. There are, however, Biblical examples that can illustrate this way of praying.
Arrow prayers are short. They are effective and can be done throughout the day and help us reach a “pray without ceasing” that Paul describes in I. Thessalonians 5:16-18. He says, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Jesus gave a prime example of an “arrow” prayer when in Matthew 14:19, He looked up to Heaven and blessed and broke the bread to feed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish.
Another example is found in Joshua 10:12-13 – “… Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said, “Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; and, Moon, in the valley of Ajoalon.” And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies.”
Prayer time can be all of the time. It is a relationship and communion with our Heavenly Father. Arrow prayers are simple. This may be a way for you to converse with Him more if you have never considered praying like this.
Arrow prayers are also a great way to start teaching children about prayer because they are simple.
It may be helpful for you to create a list of short, effective, arrow prayers to start you on the path of this type of praying.
Here are some examples that may help you get started:
- Thank you for today.
- Let this be Your day.
- Thank you for your provision.
- Thank you for ____.
- I praise you.
- Praise Your Holy Name.
- Keep me healthy.
- Heal me.
- Help me.
- Help me to do ____.
- Show me Your way.
- Help me to help others.
- Grant me Your understanding.
- Give me Your wisdom.
And at the end of each prayer add, “In Jesus’ name, Amen” because the name of Jesus is powerful in the spiritual realm.
Keep praying and keep receiving the abundance that God has to give you each day in all areas of your your life!
