When you are suffering, so much more scripture speaks directly to you. Scripture is a source of overpowering joy. Joy defends. It is a fence that holds back the wiles of the evil one. It is a defense against so many of life’s struggles.
Psalms 84:12 – O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you.
Philippians 1:4 – Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy.
So it is when we pray — make all of our requests with joy!
Psalms 40:8 – I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.
Look at problems in your life joyfully. I like the way the devotional, “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young illustrates it, “Make friends with the problems in your life. Every problem can teach you something.”
From this same devotional by Sarah Young, “Cultivate a thankful heart, for this glorifies Me and fills you with joy.”
Also, James 1:2 – 4 NIV – Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Finally, II. Corinthians 12:10 – Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessites, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Rely on the strength of Christ. When we are weak, we have to rely on Him. This is why we can say, “I am strong in Christ Jesus” and “I have joy in Christ Jesus” no matter what is happening around us and in us… in the world.
