I introduced this app in the article, “How to Study the Bible” but it was a “cameo” appearance and I think it could use a more detailed introduction and instructions. It’s a free, ad-free app that you can use on your phone, tablet or computer.
Recently, I have seen a post on Facebook from several people’s timelines that says:
What if we began to treat our Bibles the way we treat our phone?
What if we…
- Carried it with us everywhere?
- Turned back to get it if we forgot it?
- Check it for messages throughout the day?
- Used it in case of an emergency?
- Spent an hour or more using it each day.
Now I can see their concern, but the wonderful thing is that the “YouVersion” Bible app on your phone lets you treat your Bible as you would treat your phone!
It’s amazing how much more accessible and fun it becomes to read the Bible.
Some of the translations also have audio versions (you will see a little audio icon to let you know if it is available) so the Bible can be read to you as you go about your day. It makes it very easy to listen.
If you feel like the King James version is too archaic and difficult to read, there are many versions available. I keep about five different English translations handy. My two favorites are the King James and the New Living Translation. It’s very easy to switch between and read the different versions to help you understand the passages more fully.
The translation is not only in English. The Bible is available in 679 languages.
Have you been looking for a reading plan that will help you read the Bible in 90 days or a year or another time/goal period? The app has several time oriented plans.
Have you been looking for a Bible reading plan that covers a particular topic? There are over 800 plans for you to look through to see if there is a topic you are interested in pursuing. A friend recommended the “Detox Your Soul” plan that I just completed. Now I am looking through the plans for topics on “Prayer” and am currently going through a plan on “Justice.”
You can create notes in the app. You can highlight scriptures. You can connect with friends to go through plans together and share highlighted scriptures and notes. You can also “like” and add comments to your friends highlighted scriptures or notes.
Everyday there is a “Scripture for the Day” to read. Very often it is exactly a word that speaks to my heart.
Reading, studying and meditating on the Bible is spiritual food and water. It is no secret that it helps keep you healthy in mind, body and spirit and this app really helps!
